Rolex Daytona Watches Online

Officially referred to by the Swiss watchmaker as the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, this mechanical luxury wristwatch model is among the most famous ever to have been produced. Indeed, the highest sum ever paid at auction for a wristwatch was for a Daytona, one that had belonged to the movie star and racing driver, Paul Newman. Not to be confused with the Day-Date wristwatch also by Rolex, the Daytona’s name doesn’t refer to a day display at all. Rather, this name was given to the watch in 1963 after the International Speedway in Daytona, Florida.

Designed to meet the demands of motorsport in the pre-digital age, the Rolex Daytona features a tachymetric scale in addition to three counters that are located in the middle of the dial. As well as the traditional hands associated with any wristwatch, the Daytona’s pushers and counters are designed to allow elapsed time to be measured by the wearer conveniently, ideal for judging endurance races accurately while behind the wheel.

Given its distinctive look and sporty functionality, this Rolex watch wasn’t just a hit with racing drivers and motorsport teams when it first came out but gained a wide fanbase. Older versions are hand-wound and slightly smaller. The second series, introduced in 1988, offers owners a self-winding movement. The most recent models Rolex has made use fewer components than older versions which allows more space for a large mainspring to be housed. As such, up to 72 hours of reserve power can be maintained by modern Rolex Daytonas.
