Rolex Explorer Watches Online

Marketed by Rolex as an expedition watch, the Explorer was first launched in 1954 to coincide with the first successful attempt to scale the world’s highest peak in the Himalayas. Featuring numerals in the three, six and nine positions, the Explorer I has an elegant appearance despite the rugged nature of its design. Built for harsh environments and longevity, this durable timepiece has a stainless steel oyster case, an oyster bracelet with a simple folding clasp and a screw-in crown. Designed to be waterproof for snorkeling and swimming, but not at depth, this model features Superluminova on the hands and indexes, meaning that it will glow slightly in the dark making it ideal to read in all conditions.

The Explorer II was launched by Rolex in 1971 while it still continued to produce versions of the Explorer I. This watch model is easily distinguished from its predecessor because it has an additional 24-hour indication. The purpose of it is to allow the wearer to easily tell the time in another time zone as well as to help cavers to be able to orient themselves underground without reference to any natural light at all. The first Explorer II models were made with a 39mm case until 1984, featuring a highly distinctive orange hour hand. Those made from 1985 to 1988 have a larger 40mm case. Since 2011, 42mm cases have been used by Rolex. The Explorer II remains in production to this day with a choice of either black or white dials.
