There are some superficial similarities between the Submariner and the Sea-Dweller, two superb chronometers made by Rolex. However, as soon as you start to get to know these luxury wristwatches a bit better, you will soon realise how distinctive they are, too. In fairness, it wouldn’t be right to say one is better than the other despite there being some understandably strong opinions about two watches which are – when all is said and done – design classics. The main thing to take on board is what gives each watch its own identity when choosing which one to invest in. Let’s look at the main differences between them first.
Distinctive Features of the Rolex Submariner and the Sea-Dweller
Perhaps the most obvious distinction to be made between the Sea-Dweller and the Submariner is that the former is designed for deep sea use by divers. Unless you are a diving enthusiast, this won’t make much of a difference. The Sea-Dweller DeepSea model can go down to 3,900 metres which means its design limits will only be tested by professionals. By contrast, the Submariner is rated to be waterproof at depths of up to 300 metres. Even standard, non-DeepSea Sea-Dwellers are rated for depths of 1,220 metres.
The Sea-Dweller has a 43mm case while the Submariner’s is a slightly less chunky 41mm. This makes the two stand out visually perhaps more than anything else. Thirdly, owners of a Rolex Submariner model will notice that their watch has a glidelock extension system on the bracelet. Contrastingly, Sea-Dwellers have a fliplock extension link on their bracelets which some people prefer.
Similarities Between the Sea-Dweller and the Submariner
Both of these luxury timepieces make use of Rolex’s famous Oystersteel cases. Both have a Triplock triple waterproofness system which means they are good for use in marine environments. With screw-down crowns, both watches possess white hour markers set against a black dial to make them easy to view even underwater. The Rolex Calibre 3135 movement features in both models. This displays the hour, minute and seconds and also shows the day of the month.
Furthermore, both have a unidirectional rotatable ceramic bezel to help divers recall exactly how long they’ve been below the surface. As such, when comparing the Sea-Dweller with the Submariner, it is probably best to say that these two watches have more in common with one another than they have which separates them.
Subtle Difference Between the Rolex Models
Given some of the clearer differences between Submariners and Sea-Dwellers and their obvious design similarities, it is also important to note some of the more subtle design touches. One such subtlety is the use of red on the Sea-Dweller’s dial lettering. Submariners use white only. In terms of options, the Submariner has more variants, too. There is a blue dial version, for example, which can be tracked down with white gold trim. In addition, some Submariners have no date display whereas this is not the case with Sea-Dwellers.
